Hey everyone. I was thinking that it would be cool to start a community for people who are new to fandom. So I created fandom_school. It's for everyone who wants to learn more about fandom. There will be weekly challenges and info. You can be in any fandom to join. Enjoy!

To run without a router.

My Netgear stopped working and I can't get it to work.

Is linux safe enough to be on the internet with cable internet?

well, this community is pretty much dead.

i do understand there's fedora_linux to get alot of technical help, but it's sometimes too big to get a reply. i was expecting for this to be a place for starters to just ask away.

so anyways, if anyone wants to bother, go ahead and drop a reply.

i still consider myself a linux newbie. i like it alot and have enjoyed getting alot of 'em plugins to work (pdf, mp3, video files, etc).

question is, what's up with security in fedora? i've seen the options for a firewall, but is that it? if so, anyone know how effective it is (as good as XP firewall)?

i think i've seen this option there somewhere, but what's the equivalent in fedora of window's "msconfig", "tracert", "ping", "ipconfig"?

thanks guys/gals and keep posting.

basic GRUB question [Nov. 29th, 2004|06:50 pm]

Hi, I just updated from Red Hat 8 to Red Hat 9, and I've run into a problem. The last time I installed, I never had to mess with grub or lilo, and I thought I'd chosen the graphical install this time as well. Turns out I didn't. Anyways, I am not sure what it is I need to do from this point. I have the RH9 installation guide, but for all the basic how-to's, it referred me to the RH Getting Started guide, which I do not. I looked on the site online, but its more general than I can handle. I'm not even sure what questions to be asking. I got a list of commands with 'help', but I've about reached the end of useful flailing around. I know this thing tells the computer what OS to boot from, but this is the only one on there, so I'm not sure why it needs to choose. When I looked at the section on the RH page about GRUB, it had a sample of the sort of editing one would need to do on the config file, but when i typed in 'e' for edit, it said unrecognized command.

Hi everyone!

Hope people start joining and helping each other learn the Fedora and/or Linux operating system.
To start it off, I'd like for everyone who signs up to say a little of their background to see where everybody's coming from.

Started:    Windows 98 SE
Used:        Windows ME, XP Pro, Fedora
Current:    Windows XP Pro and Fedora Core 3
Languages: C++, Java, VB.net, SQL -> basic experience on all
Info:         I'm a Junior Information Systems major college student who just switched from 4 years of using Windows and is trying to learn all the secrets and tricks of Fedora and any other linux system. I'll help as much as I can and would like the same from others. I have previous experience with Redhat, so I'm kinda familiar with basic commands.

Anyone else?
