cannot access fedora shares from xp [Jun. 8th, 2005|09:41 pm]
Fedora Newbies

hey guys, wondering if anyone of you could help me...

i just got an old 733 MHz box and installed F3 on it. well, i was having trouble seeing my home network shared computers, but took care of it by disabling the firewall that comes with fedora. i'll probably go back later on and figure out how to still access them with the firewall enabled.

anyways, just before i posted this, i was having trouble seeing my fedora shares from xp. i fixed it by making the "Authentication mode" to "Share", but this could be the wrong setting too. now, i can see the shares from xp, but when i try to open them, it asks me for a username/password. I supposedly created 2 users in "Samba Users" but could have been wrong.

Any inputs? My main problem is configuring Samba correctly and getting the users/passwords to work.

Did you ever get this working?

pretty much. i just created another user from within Samba. The user, by default, can browse pretty much everything except my real username's home folder or root's. It's nothing that changing permissions didn't fix.

I was able to share from windows and vice versa. I didn't mess much with it after I got it working, though I still need to make it usable with the firewall on.

Have you tried configuring Samba via SWAT or Webmin?
Did you use Samba's testparm to check your config file?
